Abstract
The UCSB Institute for Energy Efficiency (IEE) is a world-renowned leader in developing breakthrough energy technologies that substantially save energy while advancing the standard of living worldwide. IEE's interdisciplinary research has been the foundation for numerous energy-saving innovations including bright and energy-saving white light LED lighting, more energy efficient data-center communications and interconnects, and software that manages and reduces energy usage in buildings worldwide.
In this talk, we will present an overview of IEE 2.0, the next generation of IEE’s research including describing the underlying research themes for IEE 2.0: Smart Societal Infrastructure, Energy Efficient Computing and Communications, and the Food-Energy-Water Nexus. We will also take this opportunity to present a few details on our new home, UCSB’s Henley Hall, which will be completed in 2020. IEE’s state of the art facilities and labs in Henley Hall will provide the bridge to an even better, more energy efficient future.
Biography
Mark Abel
Mark Abel is the Associate Director and an Executive Advisor to the Institute for Energy Efficiency at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Mark guided the development of IEE 2.0, the strategy for IEE's future. He is now working with IEE's faculty and key stakeholders inside and outside UCSB to help the Institute realize the promise of IEE 2.0.
Mr. Abel joined UCSB and IEE as he retired from Intel in 2018 where he was a longtime senior director of research. His last Intel role was leading Intel’s worldwide network of academic research centers. During his Intel career, his research labs and tech transfer teams won or shared Intel’s highest honor, the Intel Achievement Award, seven times for the creation of new technologies and new businesses for Intel including the invention and delivery of technologies that shipped in over a billion Personal Computers. Mr. Abel has served on numerous industry and academic boards including recently completing his role as longtime Chair of the University of Michigan Computer Science and Engineering National Advisory Board. He is also an Affiliate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. Prior to joining Intel, Mr. Abel held research and leadership positions with Bell Labs, Xerox PARC, U S WEST Advanced Technologies and Siemens.
John Bowers
John Bowers is the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute for Manufacturing (AIM) Integrated Photonics. John focuses on developing the West Coast portion of AIM and on developing integrated lasers onto the platform. He is a Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Materials and Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSB and holds the Fred Kavli Chair in Nanotechnology. He is the Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency. He is a cofounder of Aurrion, Aerius Photonics and Calient Networks. Dr. Bowers is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors, a fellow of the IEEE, OSA and the American Physical Society, and a recipient of the IEEE Photonics Award, OSA Tyndall Award, the OSA Holonyak Prize, and the IEEE LEOS William Streifer Award.
