Abstract
The IEEE Photonics Society's second Spring Workshop on Light Science at UCSB is aimed at increasing awareness of optics and photonics with speakers from both university and industry settings.
The event will include a career fair, in which attendees will have one-on-one time with representatives of local companies as well as a poster session to display research being done at UCSB.
The talks will feature lectures on cutting-edge research in the area from varying fields from both graduate students and members of industry that use and manipulate light as well as lectures on careers in the industry and professional development.
Don't miss keynote speaker Dan Wasserman, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Texas at Austin and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. Professor Wasserman will speak about his work in the development of optical devices for the mid-infrared (IR) spectral range (3 - 30 microns). Because components are not as mature as shorter wavelength technologies (think telecom and lighting), mid-IR researchers have a "unique materials playground" to explore light-matter interactions and new applications. Before joining UT Austin in 2016, Professor Wasserman was on the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2007 - 2015. In 2004, he completed a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering at Princeton University. Professor Wasserman earned a B.S. in Engineering/Physics and History from Brown University in 1998. He is also the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and the AFOSR Young Investigator Award.
