Abstract

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have been used as a power source for mobile electronic devices such as notebook PCs and cellular phones since they were introduced into the market in 1991.  Recently, they have been attracting attention as a power source for automobiles and energy storage devices for sustainable energy resources such as solar and wind power, which are key technologies in solving global warming and energy security problems.  Market demands have caused a change in the active materials used in lithium batteries, which in turn has forced a change in the electrolyte materials used.  In this talk, Dr. Ue will review the history of the electrolyte materials in lithium batteries and discuss how an understanding of these materials relates to next generation of Lithium-ion batteries.

Biography

Makoto Ue was the general manager of the Battery Materials Laboratory at Mitsubishi Chemical from 2003 to 2010. He obtained M.S. and Ph.D. from Tokyo University in 1981 and 1995, respectively, and studied at the University of Pittsburghand Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1988 to 1990. Dr. Ue holds about 280 patents and has been the recipient of many awards. Most recently, he was awarded the 2006 Surface Finishing Society of Japan Technology Award and wrote chapters in the book Technologies and Materials for Large Supercapacitors, CMC (2010).
