Abstract
This talk will dicuss the chirp managed laser (CML), an alternative transmitter technology that allows a directly modulated laser to be used in high performance applications with a smaller size, lower power consumption, less device complexity and lower cost. The CML comprises a directly modulated laser and an isolated passive optical filter, and can have lower power consumption than externally modulated transmitters. The CML has large tolerance to chromatic dispersion, reaching over 360 km transmission at 10 Gb/s in standard single mode fiber without dispersion compensation, integrated in a SFP+ transceiver consuming less than 1.2 W. Other applications of CML include a generation of advanced modulation formats such as RZ-AMI, and RZ-DPSK with considerable savings in transmitter size, cost and power consumption. We will also review device technologies developed for CML applications. These include a full C band tunable 10 Gb/s Modulated Grating Y branch Distributed Bragg Reflector, a 4 element 25 Gb/s integrated frequency modulated DBR array and a compact 10 Gb/s photonic integrated CML. Potential future applications of CML and the required device development will also be dicussed.
Biography
Daniel Mahgerefteh is currently the Director of Advanced Technology at Finisar Corporation. Daniel was the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Azna LLC and the co-inventor of the company’s Chirp Managed Laser (CML) technology. The CML is a novel transmitter technology that allows the use of compact, low cost directly modulated lasers for high performance long reach fiber-optic telecommunication applications and eliminates the need for conventional external modulators. Before founding Azna, Daniel was responsible for technology assessment in the business development group at Opnext, and before that was a senior research scientist at Agere systems, and Lucent Technologies in its Ortel division. Daniel was a research faculty at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland from 1993 to 2000. Daniel has authored numerous publications and has over 50 issued or pending patents. Daniel has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Southern California.
