Novel Applications of LEDs for Energy Savings: A Systems Level View
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provide great energy savings, but there are still many challenges to overcome before they become viable alternatives to present lighting options. LEDs are DC devices trying to fit into an AC world. They do not tolerate heat well and the light is not aesthetic. In addition, the costs are still very high, partly due to the lack of standardized packaging. On the bright side, new LED growth patterns and automated manufacturing processes are increasing production speeds and lowering costs. While progress is being made, there is still a long way to go to make possible the widespread adoption of LED lighting.
