Solarmer is developing plastic solar cells that are flexible and lightweight, and can be made in various colors, shades, shapes and sizes. The cells can be used in portable electronics, building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and many fabrics, such as jackets, handbags and tents. To date, the company has achieved a single cell efficiency of 7.9% and a panel efficiency of 3.6%. The cells are relatively low cost and are manufactured without the use of toxic or hazardous materials. Solarmer's pilot line is currently operational, and its initial product launch will take place during the first quarter in 2011.
