Intel’s silicon photonics research is working to prove that silicon is a viable optical material as copper interconnects are reaching their limits. Goals include providing a standard low cost optical based interconnect with support for key existing protocols, and scalable bandwidth and power that will support multiple devices. Overall, the solution must focus on power efficiency and economies of scale to drive down cost.
