A large opportunity exists for reducing energy use in data centers, for example by increasing utilization, eliminating unused equipment, and improving data center design (particularly cooling). Server utilization can be as low as 20%, therefore by consolidating multiple applications the number of servers needed can be reduced leading to significant energy savings. On the user side, learning behavior patterns and preferences can help facilitate adoption and result energy savings as well.
