Energy Efficiency at Extreme Scales
Large improvements in energy efficiency are possible by redesigning computers and improving the facilities in which they are used. NERSC’s roadmap sets goals for a factor of 10 improvement in computer capability every 3-4 years, partially through redesigning processors and software to use parallelism. In terms of facility design, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab conducted studies of more than 30 data centers and identified best practices. By taking advantage of the natural surroundings such as outside air and by using sensor networks, energy savings can be realized.
