Microsoft is working to reduce the impact of its operations and products while also helping other organizations achieve environmental sustainability. The company focuses on three areas: reducing its energy demand by identifying inefficiencies, reducing the number of machines and through virtualization; managing its energy and environmental footprint by centralizing control and developing systems management software; and rethinking organizational practices by reducing travel, streamlining processes, and reducing the impact of data centers.
