The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 put a ban on incandescent light bulbs. The 100-watt light bulb was phased out last January. Starting this week, the 75-watt incandescent is being taken off shelves.

Philips Electronics announced its plans to pursue the Department of Energy's L Prize, an award to the first company that can create an an energy efficient, commercially-scalable incandescent light bulb. The L prize awards $10 million and potentially lucrative federal purchasing agreements.
