US Army prototype of a flexible display worn on the wrist
The U.S. Army is evaluating full-color flexible displays that can be worn on the wrist. The prototypes are built on foil-backed amorphous silicon electronics and use efficient organic light-emitting diode materials that consume one-fourth the power of a conventional OLED.

The chip for a power-optimization device
Chinese photovoltaic giant Suntech is investing in electronics to help squeeze more power out of solar arrays: smart module power-optimizers that correct for a drop in the array’s power output due to shading or debris and microinverters that adjust the voltage-current levels of each panel.

SolarPrint has developed a process to replace the liquid in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology with a printable electrolyte paste. The fully printable cells can be turned out fast and cost-effectively, and are more efficient due to their nanostructure components.

The DOE has funded a factory to produce activated carbon materials that could improve ultracapacitors for batteries and energy-storage devices, but it's not clear that battery manufacturers and automakers will have much use for the material in the next few years.

An array of optical filters
Researchers at Caltech have discovered a way to tune optical filters to dynamically control which wavelengths of infrared light they respond to. One potential application of these tunable metamaterials could be thermal photovoltaics that maintain high efficiency regardless of the weather.
