The spice and seasoning company now generates more energy than it consumes. McCormick & Company built a solar array, and it reduced its energy consumption by installing many building upgrades. The company added energy efficient lighting and a HVAC system, among others.

At the Light Fair conference, General Electric introduced a LED light bulb that "breathes." The companies, GE and Nuventix, developed "synthetic jet cooling technology." This means that the LED has a diaphragm embedded in the bulb that vibrates and helps keep the bulb cool.

With the age of the incandescent light bulb fading rapidly, the holy grail of the lighting industry is to develop a highly efficient form of solid-state lighting that produces high quality white light. Quantum dots may be the answer.

James Speck, a professor of materials at UCSB, member of SSLEC's Executive Committee, and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Wide Band-Gap Semiconductors, has been named the campus's first Seoul Optodevice Chair in Solid State Lighting.

Seoul Semiconductor Company launched a new LED product. Institute faculty member Shuji Nakamura is an advisor to Seoul and was there for the unveiling. Also, Seoul Optodevice Company awarded Institute faculty member James Speck a $500,000 endowment for his work in solid-state lighting.
