Digital Lumens' LED Lighting Systems--which save up to 90 percent of lighting energy--have been installed in Americold facilities in three states.The fixtures also reduce AC and chiller power consumption in cold storage warehouses by 20-40 percent by eliminating heat transfer to chilled food.

Wildcat Discovery Technologies' combinatorial chemistry tools give the company the capability to rapidly synthesize inorganic materials. A recent synthesis lead to the discovery of a new rechargeable battery material, which they claim can improve battery performance by 25 to 65 percent.

The lower costs that can result from energy-efficiency improvements (e.g. better fuel economy, utility bill savings, etc.) can paradoxically encourage consumers to use more energy. This rebound effect can cause a net increase in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
