New York City has publicly posted 2011 energy benchmarking results for over 2,000 large commercial properties. This is the first time any US city has disclosed private-sector building energy data. Results show areas for possible energy improvements.

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute studied how to make the semiconductor germanium emit laser light. This could be the basis for new computer chips in which information will be transferred partially in the form of light. This technology can improve the performance of our electronics.

California officials have completed a successful trial of its much-anticipated carbon trading scheme. The cap-and-trade platform will be started on Nov. 14, when more than 400 companies will be able to buy and sell tradeable carbon credits through quarterly auctions.

President Obama signed an executive order that sets a national goal of 40 GW of new combined heat and power (CHP) by the end of 2020. This will decrease national GHG emissions; enhance grid security; and could save manufacturers at least $100 billion in energy costs over the next decade.

Automakers will now be required to nearly double the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks by 2025 (from 29 mpg to 54.5 mpg). The new standards will save Americans $1.7 trillion in fuel costs.

Korean battery maker LG Chem is developing "cable batteries." Flexible batteries have been made before in the form of sheets, but these cable batteries are bendable in three dimensions. They could be integrated into headphones and woven into jewelry or textiles.

From 1978 to 2005, energy use in homes has remained essentially constant. There have been incredible energy efficiency improvements, but that has been offset by bigger homes and more stuff that needs to be plugged in.
