Institute for Energy Efficiency Announces 2013-2014 Holbrook Foundation Fellows

The Institute for Energy Efficiency announced today it's 2013-2014 Holbrook Foundation fellows comprised of six outstanding graduate students, each pursuing research that will change how energy is produced, used and managed.  

Introducing the 2013-2014 Holbrook Foundation Fellows and their respective areas of research:

Maurice Filo, Mechanical Engineering Department, Buildings and Design Solutions Group
Acoustic sensing, actuation and feedback control for real-time monitoring and use in microgeneration and micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) settings.

Asad IsmailComputer Science Department, Computing Solutions Group
Reducing energy cost in data centers through building a wireless facilities network to monitor energy consumptions of various components, and reducing energy of data transmissions in smartphones by intelligently selecting and configuring the radio in use. 

Natalie LarsonMaterials Department, Production and Storage Solutions Group
Design, synthesis and characterization of high temperature SiC-based ceramic composites, which can enable higher operating temperatures with consequent increases in thermal efficiency as well as reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Rebecca ReitzMaterials Department, Production and Storage Solutions Group
Fundamental investigation of the mechanisms controlling microstructure evolution in novel ceramic matrices synthesized by hybrid approaches, and application of the emerging understanding to design SiC based composites with self-healing attributes and higher temperature capabilities for improved fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Minh TranElectrical and Computer Engineering Department, Electronics and Photonics Solutions Group
Investigating the integration of ultralow loss waveguides with hybrid silicon lasers and photodetectors for novel sensing devices.

Wennie WangMaterials Department, Lighting Solutions Group
Studying loss mechanisms and devising solutions to overcome these limitations in solid-state lighting.

The Holbrook Foundation Fellowships are made possible by the generous support of George and Tara Holbrook. Awarded to incoming PhD students for the 2013-2014 academic year, these fellowships help recruit and retain top graduate students to UC Santa Barbara. Fellows receive a top-off stipend during the academic year and a research position during the summer.
