Carbon productivity has to be increased to maintain our lifestyle. There is a huge opportunity in efficiency in dollars per tons of carbon dioxide displaced savings. If the economy is in a recession, there is a big reduction in energy used and CO₂ released. US energy demand has never declined, except in a recession. Electricity consumption per capita has remained flat since 1976, but with a large population growth meaning large energy efficiency gains. At $0.39/kWh everything matters and everyone cares about energy efficiency; this is why California is so much more energy efficient that the rest of the nation. Energy efficiency can significantly grow GDP by making the economy more efficient.
