Today, energy efficiency is being used to solve societal and political problems, instead of individual companies trying to make their product cheaper as in the past. Saturn started paying their painter by cars painted, instead of by paint sold to push the painter to conserve. Increase in energy use is in some cases due to urbanization and losing natural temperature control systems like trees. Investing in nature’s capital is a smart twenty-first century energy policy. The politics of climate change will affect future energy policy. The marketplace is a challenge to the energy efficiency future since it does not look at long term costs of actions.
