IT contributes about 2% of the energy usage in the United States. This small, but rapidly growing, part of US energy use needs to be addressed. There are significant opportunities for energy savings in small intervals in all sectors by updating the IT infrastructure. For example, most computer platforms do a full power-up every 10 ms to instruct the operating system. Efforts to lengthen the power-up interval slightly produce big efficiency savings. These updates not only lead to an increase in efficiency, but often enhance productivity.
