Internet Router Technology Futures

Due to the unpredictability of the internet, some aspects are over engineered, making it necessary to continually reevaluate processes and energy use. Computers can be made with multi-cores, so when in low use one the cores can turn off, since it takes a lot less power to use one small core and have one core turned off, than to use one big core at 50%. Consumer routers also possess a efficiency problem. Consumer routers are 1000x less efficient than data center routers and even though they are much smaller, there are a million times more consumer routers. To improve the energy efficiency of these devices, it is necessary to either reduce peak power or reduce average power.
