An LED source lasts for a very long time and is ideal for controlled lighting, like beam lighting. The longevity of the source has to be matched by the entire system so the housing does not break down while the LED is still operational. LED manufacturers look to close the lumen/cost gap compared to conventional within the next 5-10 years. Compact fluorescents, which are replacing incandescent lighting and have become very popular in the last five years, have been overhyped.
